MEDEF Urges Government To Empower Teachers

The Founder and CEO for Media For Development Foundation
(MEDEF) a Human Rights and non-profit Media Advocacy Organization in Sunyani,
Mr.Emmanuel O. Appiah has urged the government of Ghana to empower teachers in
the country in order to build a strong and sustainable society.

According to him, the contribution of teachers in Ghana’s
development cannot be over emphasize so it is important for government to empower
teachers in all aspect of their lives so that the society will also benefits.
Mr. Emmanuel Odeneho Appiah disclosed this at a press
conference in Sunyani on the world teacher’s day. The world teacher’s day is
annual events observed by 100 countries in the country and the theme for this
year’s world teacher’s day is “Empowering teachers, building sustainable
societies”.
He said, according to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents
a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed
for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.
He added that the global union federation that represents
education professionals’ world wide strongly believes that World Teachers’ Day
should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world.
He said as a media advocacy organization which aims at
championing the development of the people especially in the areas of education,
we will continue to advocates on issues that will promote and develop teachers
in our society.
The CEO added that teacher empowerment should entail the
provision of decent working conditions, well-resourced, safe and healthy
working environments, trust, professional autonomy, academic freedom, high
quality initial training and continuous professional development, among others.
He emphasize that  no
freedom to exercise their profession and the face of low status in society, the
provision of high quality education and its contribution to sustainable
development remains a major challenge to the teaching profession for that
government must intervene.
Mr. Emmanuel Odeneho Appiah stated that it is time for
educators in the country to stand together for the profession and call on
governments to take concrete measures to empower teachers for building
sustainable societies and has also call on governments to implement the new
education goal and all of its targets by investing in teachers.
The CEO has commended teachers in the country for their
dedication, commitment and hard work in providing quality education in the
country despite some challenges facing the teaching profession and urged them
to continue the good work in order to receive God blessing.
