The Women’s Wing under the Islamic Mission Secretariat has called for “collective support for tutors to well impact both academic, Godly knowledge and moral uprightness in our children and general Ghanaian youth”.

According to the wing, “every woman is potential and a first teacher to empower children in their homes and also inculcate the Islamic values and sense of Godliness in their children”.

This was at the 24th Women’s Wing National Conference under the Islamic Mission Secretariat, held at Krobo-Techiman in the Bono East region.

The three-day conference, from Friday to Sunday was under the theme: “Combating the negative effects of social media, the role of Muslim Woman”.

Addressing the conference, Hajia Marriam Suleman Nketia, the General Secretary for the Wing commended successive governments for policy interventions such as the National Service Scheme, Youth Employment Agency, NABCO, You-Start among others and appealed for more job creation efforts in conjunction with the Private sector through the creation of enabling environment for graduates to better marry theory with practice to make them more employable after school.

She stated the Mission was basically to promote unity among Muslims and non-Muslims for harmonious and peaceful coexistence, renew the faith of Muslims to be more committed to the rules of Islam and facilitate fundraising for developmental projects.

It was also to ensure “our youth are raised to appreciate family and proper human values and interactions”, she added.

She said the Women`s Wing formed 27 years ago was to champion the crucial needs of women in achieving the mission`s broader objectives which include support for the needy and the vulnerable in society and engaging in vocational activities to provide livelihoods for the less privileged.

Hajia Marriam noted social media has done tremendous good to people in terms of technological advancement, but its use was being abused by the youth in recent times in encouragement of unacceptable doings such as cyber fraud, the LGBTQI+ and promotion of nudity.

The theme for the conference was therefore to bring to the fore, the significant role women as mothers would play in combating the negative impact of social media other than its intended purposes.

Umi Mainamuna Sheaibu Abban, the National Coordinator for the Islamic Mission Secretariat, speaking to the Ghana News Agency earlier in an interview said the conference aimed at sensitizing and guarding parents and all Islamic women to keep eye on their children and wards to desist from social vices and the negative influences of social media and subsequent effects.

Activities of the conference included a clean-up exercise, an Islamic teaching quiz competition, and donation of food and other items to Aworowa and Naomi Akoma Memorial Clinics and Bethesda Children’s Home, all in Krobo-Techiman.

Others were training the women and youth and equipping them with handicraft working skills and free Health screening for Blood Pressure, HIV and Sugar levels, she added.

Umi Sheaibu Abban said, “the training is for improvement of livelihoods and sustainability, self-employment creation to reduce the nation’s unemployment situations and alleviate poverty”.

She said more than 300 beneficiaries were trained in making shower gel, pomade, detergents and fresh yoghurt and were given preparation guiding documents.

According to Umi Sheaibu Abban, one can serve God well when the person is healthy and eased from severe poverty, hence the training.

She added the Secretariat, in addition to the educational facilities and as part of its contribution to Nation building, has commenced construction of a hospital at Krobo-Techiman to ensure beneficiaries of the facility enjoy special and preferred health care services delivery.

Acres of land has been acquired for cashew farming projects at Nkoranza and the Jaman South Municipality as the source of funding for the Secretariat’s activities.
