Charles Antwi

The man at the center stage of killing Ghana’s President has been freed.

An Accra High Court on Monday ordered the release of Charles Antwi, the 36-year-old man who was jailed for attempting to assassinate President John Mahama in his church in July this year.

Presiding Judge, J.A Okwabi, whose ruling overturned the 10-year prison sentence imposed on him by a circuit court judge Justice Francis Obiri in last month said; the circuit judge erred in his judgement.

The ruling  follows a writ filed by a public interest lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu in challenging the earlier ruling, of which he cites errors in the judgement.

The argument being that the 36-year-old was mentally unstable and therefore lacked the capacity to stand trial. Charles Antwi will now be sent to a Psychiatric Hospital for thorough examination and care.

“He is free from the clutches of the law; he is free BNI [harassment]; he is free from prison and every proceeding that took place before he was sent to prison have all been quashed…so Charles indeed is free,” Francis Sosu told Joy News after the ruling.
