Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority,
James Lartey has said the law banning the advertisement of alcohol in the media
before 8:00PM is not new.

Speaking in an interview with Nana KAS on Suncity 97.1 FM
Morning Drive, Mr. James Lartey stated that the provision has existed for a
very long time.
“Law banning advertisement of alcohol is not new. The
regulation or provision is in our guidelines for a long time. Sometimes
enforcing regulation is some way.  We
have realized that it is needful for that part of the regulation to be
enforced…and we want to enforce it effectively,” he said.
“It is stipulated in our guidelines for alcoholic advertisements
that advert on alcohol should be played between the hours of 8:00PM and 6:00AM.
This has been in the guideline for a long time,” Mr. James Lartey disclosed.
According to him, there are so many things in the public
health act but it is not all that they [FDA] are acting on.
“Regulations are dynamic. We started enforcing regulation on
the use of celebrities in alcohol advertisement some years ago. It got to a
time that celebrities were used and some celebrities have the potential of
influencing children under the age of 18-years…then we came in to place a ban
on it since it was already in our provision,” he added.
The Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority
further stated that the rampant advertisement wets the appetite of children and
there is the need to deal with it.
He indicated that the Food and Drugs Authority will not
relent in sanctioning any media house which will not follow the directive.
The ban on both advertisement and Live Presenter Mention
(LPM) of alcoholic beverages in the media before 8:00PM will take effective
from January, 1, 2017, according to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
