A task force set up by the Sunyani Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to see to the adherence of the COVID-19 preventing protocols had impounded quantities of items of arrogant traders doing normal businesses at unauthorized places in the Municipality.

The task force comprises of Security personnel in uniform, delegations from the Sunyani Traditional Council and delegations from the Sunyani Youth Development Association.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency in an interview over the weekend, Superintendent Haruna Alhassan, the task force commander said the items were confiscated because the owners infringed the law and COVID-19 preventing directives, particularly the social distancing and wearing of nose mask.

Giving his general assessment on the public adherence to the directives in the Municipality, Supt. Alhasan regretted that for about five weeks since the task force began operations, several education, sensitisations and warnings were given but some individuals always prove arrogance.

They didn’t want to observe the social distancing protocol, wear masks and adhere to the safety measures of the MUSEC to prevent the virus, hence the need to take such actions.

The recalcitrant traders monitor the absence of the taskforce and go back to do businesses at their normal unsafe places, Supt. Alhasan added.

The seized items included second-hand shoes, clothing, bags, cosmetics and consumables.

Supt. Alhasan cautioned that it is for the safety of the general public that the satellite markets were created to help prevent the spread of the virus, therefore, the taskforce would keep their monitoring eyes wild to ensure the adherence if the protocols.

Nana Kwame Addai Kuntuma IV, the ‘Nifahene’ of Sunyani and a member of the Sunyani Traditional Council’s taskforce delegation said the seized items would be donated to inmates of the Sunyani Central Prisons.

Mr Akomea Sakyi, the leader of the task force delegation from the Sunyani Youth Development Association (SYDA) suggested that any recalcitrant individual should be compelled to clear chocked gutters and some filthy areas in the Municipality to serve as a deterrent to others.
This, he said would bring sanity in the Municipality.
