At least two persons have been injured by two stray elephants in Bongo
in the Upper East region.
The two stray elephants suspected to have come from Burkina Faso
entered the Bongo district capital atabout 5:50pm on Friday.
According to the Bongo Medical Superintendent, Mr. Williams Gudu,the
two female victims between the ages of 19 and 21 years were injured on
the right thigh and on the upper right arm and have beensent to the
Bongo District Hospital for treatment.
The elephants injured the victims while residents in the area were
trying to hinder their movement.
The Bongo District Police Commander DSP Isaac Tetteh said the stray
elephants are still within the catchment area of Vea, a community in
Bongo , adding that the Police will intensify visibility on the where
abouts of the stray elephants.
DSP Tetteh warned all residents within the area and the Bolgatanga
municipality to take caution and ensure that they are not harmed by
the elephants, saying "now they are calm but you don't know what they
can do later."
The Regional Manager of Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission,
Mr. John Nada expressed hope that the elephants will leave the area
and move to where they came from.
Mr. Nada also appealed to residents to remain calm and stay away from
the animals if they come across them or see them passing by.
This is not the first time, elephants have caused problems in the region.
In 2014, one person was killed while several farms were destroyed by
eight elephants who went on rampage in Garu Tempane in the Upper East
Region.
The Assembly member for Kurinatenga, Joseph Abango told Citi news that
one of the elephants that killed the man was later killed by some
soldiers.
