A group known as Democracy Hub began a three-day protest on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to voice their grievances against the incumbent government and the state of the economy.

Coincidentally, the protest commenced on the Memorial Day of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah which is commemorated throughout the country.

Organizers and participants of the protest dubbed #OccupyJulorBiHouse have explained the reasons for sparking the demonstration which they planned to take to the Jubilee House.

Among their concerns are the government’s mismanagement of the economy and “theft that has engulfed our government from the highest levels” to which they are advocating for better interventions.

They are also accusing the government of driving several professionals, including healthcare workers out of the country due to rising costs of living and general hardship plaguing the state.

So far the protest has garnered much attention, especially on social media as people voice out their opinions and share photos and videos of ongoing events.

Police Arrests

The Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service earlier cautioned the public to desist from participating in the protest, stating that a letter had been submitted to the High Court to call off the demonstration.

Organizers of the protest who had given prior notice to the police regarding their intended action however insisted that they did not receive any such letter, which the police countered, saying their legal representatives, Atuguba & Associates, had received it on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

Earlier Thursday morning, some of the protesters who had converged at the 37 bus station were apprehended, loaded in a bus, and taken away by the police who claimed a disturbance of public order.

Meanwhile, police personnel have been cited standing guard on the streets in front of the Jubilee House manning crowd control vehicles and riot gear.
