A man who infected a woman with the HIV virus has been jailed.

Alan Mason, 45, from Endmoor, Kendal, in Cumbria, was sentenced to two years and eight months today at Carlisle Crown Court.

Mason had pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

The victim, aged 39 from Barrow, Cumbria, only became aware she had been infected with the virus after visiting her doctor.

Cumbria Police said they carried out an investigation into
allegations made against Mason that he knowingly infected his victim
with the HIV virus.

Mason reportedly met the woman in a pub and began a sexual relationship with her knowing he was HIV positive.

Detective Constable Damian West from Cumbria Police said: “This is a
unique case for Cumbria Constabulary and the sentencing imposed
highlights the disregard Mason had for his actions.

“Even though the victim has to live with this virus, modern
medication means there should be no impact on life expectancy. However,
the virus has a significant day-to-day impact on those who have to live
with it.

“If anyone has any concerns they should speak to their doctor, or
seek support from dedicated organisations, such as the Terrence Higgins
Trust.”
