The Deputy Chief Executive Officer for General Services at Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Dr. Jacob Paarechuga Anankware, has embarked on a nationwide tour to assess conditions in the agency’s regional and district offices.
Speaking during a stop in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Dr. Anankware stressed the need to “get first-hand information” about staff challenges and the state of environmental management across the country.
“The Environmental Protection Authority is primarily the public body responsible for protecting and improving the environment, co-managing our natural resources and ensuring sustainability,” he said, explaining that the trip was undertaken on behalf of EPA Chief Executive Professor Nana Ama Klutse and senior management. “If you sit in Accra, you will not really appreciate the challenges confronting our regional and area offices. So I have decided to tour the country to see how we can harness the human capital to improve environmental sustainability.”
Dr. Anankware, whose portfolio includes finance, corporate affairs, administration, procurement, and human resources, said the visits will help identify gaps and “alleviate the suffering of staff while improving performance.” He added that the tour also provides an opportunity to witness the impact of illegal mining (galamsey) and coordinate strategies to restore degraded land.
Referencing the government’s “resetting agenda,” he noted, “We can’t stay in the office and just do administrative work, we need to be on the ground. President John Mahama is in a hurry to reset Ghana, and the 24-hour economy can only succeed if we fully understand the issues affecting our environment.”
