Okyehene and President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Amoatia Ofori-Opanin II is calling for a decentralisation of Ghana’s governance system.
According to him, the country’s efforts towards development will be met with challenges if the central governance system is not abolished.
The Okyehene said the country’s present development predicament is as a result of the outdated central system of governance.
Okyehene Amoatia Ofori-Opanin II was speaking at a grand durbar of the chiefs and people of Lower Dixcove Traditional area to climax this year’s Kundum festival in Dixcove.
The Okyehene attributed the 72% fail rate in the recent West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to control of education from the Accra, adding the situation will persist until things change.
He said if the people of Dixcove, for instance, managed their own educational system with the help the District Chief Executive, education in the district would have been a lot better.
“How could you manage somebody’s school from Accra in Dixcove?”, he demanded, adding “men and women…have been stripped of their dignity unable to find work to take care of themselves and their families” also due to an ineffective central governance system.
The Okyehene was particularly unhappy that although Dixcove has abundant natural resources like gold, diamonds and timber, the district lacks basic amenities.
