There is heavy security presence at the Bolgatanga Senior High School

in the Upper East Region this afternoon, following rioting by students

who are protesting the death of a colleague.

The deceased person reportedly suffered serious head injuries after

falling badly. He was among many students who were chased by their

housemaster.

He died shortly on arrival at the hospital.

According to Joy News' Upper East correspondent, Albert Sore, the

students were asked to go for the morning assembly but some

surreptitiously stayed in the classroom in preparation towards their

mock exams which was slated for later in the day.

The Housemaster, whose name is given as Thomas Apana, went to drive

the students to Assembly. Most of them were reported to have taken to

their heels shortly after seeing him.

The deceased, whose name has been withheld, reportedly took an awkward

fall and hit his head on the ground.

The students accuse the teacher of preventing them from helping the

deceased even after he fell. According to them, the teacher had

thought the boy was feigning.

A mock exam scheduled for today has been cancelled whilst security has

been beefed up in the school, as some students threatening to raze

down the house of the Housemaster in protest over the death of their

colleague.

Albert Sore reports that a crunch meeting is currently being held by

school authorities to determine whether or not to temporarily close

down the school as a measure to bring peace to the campus.

He informed JoyNews that this may influence the final decision by the

authorities.

He suggested that school may be closed down temporarily as a measure

to ensure safety.
