The country’s minimum wage has been increased from seven cedis to eight cedis.

It represents a 14.3 per cent increase and it will take effect in January 2016, Labour and Employment Minister Haruna Iddrisu confirmed to Joy News.

There is also a ten per cent hike in public sector salaries which will also take effect same date.

The increase follows weeks of negotiations between members of the tripartite committee made up of government, the Employers’ Association and Labour.

“The National Tripartite Committee has increased the minimum wage from seven cedis to eight cedis representing 14.3 per cent.

“All employers are to comply and ensure that no worker is paid below the minimum wage,” he said.

He added government will be cross-checking to ensure that no Ghanaian worker is paid below the minimum wage.

He said for the first time the Tripartite Committee negotiated a new minimum wage before the reading of the budget statement in November.

“It does give the Finance Minister an opportunity for effective planning in the 2016 financial year,” he intimated.

The minister also said government has concluded negotiations with Labour on category 2 and 3 allowances for public sector workers who are on the single spine salary structure.
