The Brong Ahafo Regional Operations Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr George Oppong Danquah, has asked subscribers of the scheme to report providers who ask them to make co-payments.
Speaking in an interview with Block Man on Storm FM’s Morning Show ‘Perfect Storm’ in Sunyani, Mr Oppong Danquah said it is against the regulations governing the agreement between NHIA and the providers—to charge patients whose conditions are covered by the scheme.
“Co-payment is when hospital officials ask NHIS registered members to pay half of the cost that they have incurred…stating that NHIS will bear only half of the cost,” he explained.
“There are conditions which are covered by the insurance and those which is not covered. If your condition is covered by the insurance then you don’t have to pay anything. Your NHIS card details won’t be recorded if your condition is not covered by the insurance.
“I urged people to report hospitals or officials who would ask them to pay money on conditions which are covered. It is against our regulations for them to ask of co-payment. Anybody who would engage in such a practice is doing that to extort money from you,” the B/A NHIA Operations Manager stated.
He added: “It is time for NHIS clients to test the laws. Do not agree even if they are ready to give you a receipt.”
