Cases of bushfire have been on the increase in the Brong Ahafo Region, Municipal Fire Commander for Sunyani, D.O II Jonathan Ashong has disclosed.

In an interview with Nana KAS on Suncity 97.1 FM’s Morning Drive, D.O II Jonathan Ashong called on all residents to be fire conscious and help reverse the unhealthy situation.
“At the beginning of the dry season, we did what we are supposed to do concerning education on the bushfire. We have attended thirteen (13) fire cases within Sunyani alone between last week and today [Tuesday]. Two (2) of them were domestic while the remaining eleven were bushfires. I can tell you in a day, we have three (3) fire occurrences of which two (2) are bushfires,” he said.
“I have learnt that when it is getting to the rainy season people go ahead and burn their farms instead of weeding so that they can plant their crops,” D.O II Jonathan Ashong disclosed.
The Municipal Fire Commander for Sunyani called on farmers to involve the fire volunteers in their areas whenever they want to burn their farms.
“Please, if you want to burn, invite us and we will supervise it for you,” he pleaded.
He also advised against the heaping of rubbish with the intention of burning it when it is dry.
According to him, most fire cases in the region begin as bushfire and travel faster to result in the domestic fire.
D.O II Jonathan Ashong entreated farmers to create fire belts around their farms during the dry season.
