Generally, culture is the way of life of any particular group of

people. This includes their dressing, food, language, patterns of

thought, beliefs, behaviour, custom, tradition, rituals, as well as

the creative art, music, and literature of the people, among others.

“As a people, we are difined by the way we dress, the food we eat and

our languages among other very important variables.”

Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Eric Opoku tells the News Hunter

Daily Magazine.

He said Globalisation and the exposure to foreign cultures has

resulted in the weathering down of Ghana’s cherished cultural values.

“In recent times, the way we dress has undergone a lot of changes

resulting in more indecent appearances of people especially among our

youth. As we are all aware, your dressing depicts who you are and the

way you appear, speaks volumes of your personality.”

The Minister added that, modernity has led to a drastic change in our

taste for for food.

And the heightened demand for foreign food has plunged the nation into

high import bills.

Hon. Eric Opoku disclosed that, the trade imbalance affects

government’s ability to generate the needed revenue for the

prosecution of development agenda thereby putting a lot of pressure on

our exchange rate.

He therefore call on Ghanaians to retrace their steps and develop

renewed taste for our own food, dressing decently, as well as showing

more reverence for the elderly and each other.

“I wish to use this opportunity to crave your indulgence to observe

with great concern our appetite for anything western. To the extent

that we buy used cars, used electrical appliances, used shoes, used

furniture, used mobile phones and even used Brazilian hair.”
