Some drivers in the Brong Ahafo Regional Capital, Sunyani, are not comfortable with the Ghana Police Command’s directive to put a hold on checking of license and other vehicle documents.
In an interview with this reporter, the drivers expressed worry looking at the timing of the order.

They believe there are other pressing issues which need to be taken care of—as we gear towards the 2016 general elections.

They also called on the police to embark on meaningful operations that will ensure peace as tension brews in some areas because of the political season.

The drivers stated that this directive seem to be quadrennial ‘ritual’.

“I am not happy with this directive, they should explain to us when they will begin checking the documents again. This happened four years ago. I think they want us to vote for the ruling party that’s why they are doing that…but I do not think this will convince us this time around,” said one of the drivers.

Another driver added: “The IGP is playing political cards with this…why should they wait for the election period before coming out with this order?”

The Ghana Police Command on Tuesday ordered with immediate effect the suspension of all vehicle checks in the country.

A memo signed by the Commission of Police, Ransford Moses Ninson said personnel on highway patrol are to limit their work to inspection of cars for drugs and ammunition only.

For officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Division of the Police Service, DCOP Ninson said they must be deployed only for traffic management duties.

The memo also said “all Regional, Divisional, District and Unit commanders are to ensure that no permits are issued for motor check duties.

No reason was given in the memo for the new directive.
