Municipal Fire Commander for Sunyani, D.O II Jonathan Ashong, has cautioned residents against fire outbreaks as the harmattan season emerges.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nana KAS of Suncity 97.1 FM on the Suncity Morning Drive in Sunyani, D.O II Jonathan Ashong called on residents to collaborate with the Fire Service to combat fire cases.
“We are trying to intensify our fire prevention campaign. Especially in the forest areas…so around this time we want to beef up the encouragement of volunteer squad within our communities. These are people who are trained. The encouragement and motivation for them to work is not there so some of them fall out along the line. But in various communities we have some of them working. We go round to encourage them because their services are free to the communities and therefore they look up for something,” he revealed.
“The only things they get from the fire service and the assembly are cutlasses and wellington boots. So we give them these items to motivate them…to enable them to help them in the communities in the event of fire. They also educate the people in the communities. People should get advice from the volunteers in the community and if it is beyond them they [Volunteers] will get in touch with the Fire Service,” D.O II Jonathan Ashong added.
The Municipal Fire Commander advised against the use of naked fire at farms and places where the leaves are dried. He entreated farmers to create fire belts around their farms during the dry season.
D.O II Jonathan stated that the law will deal with anyone who breaks rules on fire safety.
“In the event of fire, investigation proves that people die as a result of inhaling smoke. You will first get suffocated and collapse…when you collapse, you will fall down and the fire will come and meet you. If you realize the fire is bigger than what you can do, Please ran for the safety of your life and call people to assist,” he advised.
