Event Organizers Charged To Seek License From GAMRO

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Public Relations Officer of Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), Mr.
Prince Tsegah, has disclosed in an interview that, any event organizer who uses
an artist for a show or a live band should get a license from GHAMRO.
According to him, it is not common for an organizer to pay levies for
organizing a show in Ghana. It is a copy right law that the organization (GHAMRO)
is implementing.

“Normally if you use any music for your commercials, you have to get a
license from an authorized body, if you want
to operate an FM station, you will need a license from an authorized body, but
you also need a license from GHAMRO to play music,” the GAMRO PRO averred.

“If you use music to do any kind of
business, the monies you will pay to GHAMRO is called ‘USAGE FEE’; whilst if
you use an artist for a show, the money that will pay is ‘PERFORMANCE FEE’,
which goes directly to the artist. He continued that the usage fees are
combined to pay loyalties to the artists,” he explained in an interview with
Mr. Lattus on J.Life Fm’s Entertainment Chart Show.

He emphasize that it is included in
the copyright laws, that an event organizer should get a license from an
institution who is responsible for the welfare of the musicians before he can
you music to do his business. He said since it has been stated in the copyright
laws, they cannot do anything about it unless there is an amendment from
parliament. This law is operating the world copyright societies.

Mr. Tsegah also disclosed that, the license fees are charged base on the
business you operate (big bars and restaurants pay more than the small ones).
He said if an event organizer organizes a show in a sports stadium will pay higher
than the person who organizes a show in a small auditorium and the prices are
very flexible but not very high as some people speculate.

“Although some of the businesses don’t involve the artists but the fact that
they use music to do their business and they are making monies out of it, they
need to get a license from GAMRO.”

Mr. Prince Tsegah added, “Some musicians cannot be consistent for long but
their songs are still in the system. They need something to put food on their
tables for their families; this is why Ghamro as a collective management
society responsible for the welfare of musicians in Ghana needs to collect
monies to pay as loyalties for musicians.

According to him some FM and TV stations have been sued because they have
refused to pay their license fees.
