The sixteen (16) individuals affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who stormed into the studio of United Television (UTV) have been convicted and fined GH¢2,400 each by the Achimota Magistrate Court.

They pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime and rioting, leading to their conviction and a GH¢2,400 fine to be paid by each person.

The said men invaded UTV on Saturday, October 7, 2023, during the station’s late-night live show, United Showbiz

Their concern was that the show had become overly politicized and constantly attacked the NPP government.

They also demanded an unqualified apology from highlife musician and political activist, Kwame Asare Obeng, better known as A Plus. They claimed he had insulted their party by ripping up a letter that they had addressed to the management of UTV presenting their concerns about the show.

Some staff and guests were allegedly threatened and assaulted and the incident sparked great public criticism.

16 suspects were soon after arrested by the police.

The National Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ntim, on Thursday, October 12, rendered an apology to the management of UTV for what he said were unsanctioned actions by the youth. He added that his outfit would put measures in place to forestall any such future occurrence.
