A cash amount exceeding GH¢55,000 has been discovered by authorities at the site of the quarry explosion that occurred late Saturday, September 9, in the Anto-Aboso area in the Shama District of the Western Region.

The money was discovered during a search and rescue mission and is said to belong to the illegal workers operating the mine, according to Assembly member for the area, Emmanuel Owua-Awie, per a report by 3news.com which Newshuntermag.com came across.

“During the search, some guys started picking money from the site. One of the guys saw huge sums of money. He initially took part of the money to a safe place and decided to come back for more,” the Assembly member said in an interview with Connect FM.

“Whilst he was in the process of taking more, the police officers on site spotted him and retrieved all the money. It was counted and over GH¢55,000 was realized,” he added.

The Assembly member further indicated that the discovered money would be channeled into the hospital bills of those who were injured in the explosion and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The deadly explosion that occurred last weekend claimed 5 lives and left several injured or missing.

The Minerals Commission had earlier said in a statement that the company responsible for the mining operations at the site, Sta AddamsEnterprise, was operating illegally without a permit.
