Five players Manchester United must sign to challenge for the Premier League title next season
After a terrible season Manchester United
supporters will be desperate for the club to
avoid a repeat of last summer's transfer
escapades.
David Moyes has been promised a war chest of
up to £200million to spend this summer and it
may well take a large proportion of that
budget to turn United back into title
contenders.
Despite this I don't believe the club need to
bring in nine or 10 players. Instead the club
should focus on bringing in between three and
six top notch players who can make a real
difference and supplement what is already
there.
With this in mind here are five players I would
like to see United sign this summer.
1) Luke Shaw (Southampton)
Southampton's teenage left-back has been
hugely impressive since making his Premier
League bow last season. Playing top
flight football at such a tender age has seen
his physical development go through the roof,
and his defensive is something that will
impress United supporters. With Patrice Evra
expected to leave in the summer, Shaw would
be a perfect replacement. United may well
have a free run at signing Shaw with Chelsea
and Manchester City both having other, more
pressing concerns within their squad.
2) Ezequiel Garay (Benfica)
A talented, experienced ball-playing defender,
Garay would add an air of calm to a young
Manchester United backline and really bring on
the development of Phil Jones and Chris
Smalling. He would replace a lot of the
qualities sure lost with Rio Ferdinand expected
to leave the club this summer. His contract is
out in the summer of 2015 so will cost less
than the figure of around £20million which
was quoted last summer.
3) Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich)
Arguably the best deep lying playmaker in
world football at this time. Kroos has carried
Bayern Munich's midfield with great aplomb
for the last two seasons and a dispute
regarding his contract could allow Manchester
United to blow the Bavarian giants out of the
water financially this summer. This would be
the most difficult deal for United to pull off
with Kroos a key component within the best
team in the world, however, the circumstances
surrounding the player could give United hope.
Would be the perfect replacement for Paul
Scholes.
4) William Carvalho (Sporting)
This would be a real gamble as Carvalho is
just 22 years of age and his release clause
is €45million. However, if you can get a player
with Carvalho's physical attributes at an early
age you may well be set in midfield for the
next eight years. The Portuguese midfielder is
an absolute powerhouse who can sit as a
holding midfield linchpin as well as being able
to break down opposition attacks in the middle
of the park. Would add a real degree of mettle
to Manchester United's midfield which has
been missing since the departures of firstly
Roy Keane and latterly Owen Hargreaves.
5) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)
Another 'Hollywood' name but Reus is
arguably the best out and out winger around
at the moment. He has gone from strength to
strength since his move to Dortmund from
Gladbach in July 2012 and could warrant a
wage packet which Dortmund are unable to
offer him. United have the financial clout to
pay Reus the money he probably deserves in
the current market and that could well be a
key factor in the German's decision. People
are quick to dismiss wing-play as a thing of the
past but Arjen Robben's performance against
United proves the value of out-and-out
widemen.
