A British man has been mauled to death by a shark in Australia in front of his wife.
Paul Wilcox, believed to be 50, was killed as his wife watched on in horror off the coast of Byron Bay, New South Wales.
The former IT worker was bitten while swimming in water off Clarkes Beach.
Witnesses saw a ‘six or seven foot shark’ before rushing into the water in a bid to save Mr Wilcox.
Mark Hickey, 52, a lawyer from Newcastle, told local media: ‘I saw what looked like seaweed but it was blood in the water.

‘I thought it was a dead turtle, but then I could see the shark circling and the object moving.
‘The shark came back to him and had another go. I didn’t know it was a
person – but when I realised I ran out and waded to the bank and
grabbed him and did CPR but it was too late. I brought him back in and
worked on him on the beach.’
He was confirmed dead at around 10.30am on the beach after suffering a serious injury above the knee.
It is believed Paul and his wife Victoria had been living in Australia for more than 20 years.
