AN eleven-year-old boy is said to have accidentally shot dead his
younger sister, Shallotte Wilson, at Asarekrom, a village near New
Edubiase in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region, Tuesday
afternoon.
The sordid incident happened around 2:00 pm inside their parents' room
as the siblings struggled over their father's locally made pistol,
which resembled a toy gun bought for them.
New Edubiase District Police Commander ASP Martin Assenso, who
confirmed the tragic incident, told Daily Guide that the nine-year-old
girl was hit in the head and died on the spot. According to him, the
police were trying to determine how the boy came in contact with the
gun and how he happened to fire the weapon.
The police chief stated that the victim, a class five pupil of
Asarekrom D/A Primary, and her elder brother had closed from school
with the parents, Yeboah Wilson and Janet Awusua, having left the
house.
ASP Assenso explained that their mother had gone to the farm and the
father had travelled, leaving the boy and his sister alone in the
house with the gun, which the boy did not know was loaded.
Some residents of the community claimed the 11-year-old kid grabbed
the gun from the veranda to play with it and ended up a pint-size
murderer.
They ruled the girl's death accidental, and so far the police have not
pressed any charges against the boy, except an invitation to the
parents to assist with investigation.
