Lawyer for Kwasi Kyei Darkwa (KKD), Nana Asante Bediatuo, has rejected
the allegations of rape against his client.
KKD was arrested by the Police on Sunday in Accra, and sent to the
Airport Police for questioning.
Nana Asante Bediatuo told Citi News that his client and the
complainant had "consensual sex" but dismissed the claims of sexual
assault being made against KKD.
According to him, KKD was innocent of all the charges and that "the
fact that they had consensual sex does not mean that they had a
relationship."
Nana Bediatuo stated that the allegations had come as a surprise to
his client but added that the police had the responsibility of
investigating the matter.
While admitting that a charge of rape was not bailable, Nana Asante
Bediatuo asserted that the facts of the case as stated by the
complainant did not support the charge of rape.
"He himself is in some shock because what the lady is alleging is not
what happened and we believe that the facts will establish that it
could not have been as alleged by the lady," he continued.
He added that he was interested in ensuring the rights of KKD are
respected as "the law requires that in 48 hours of being arrested you
are sent to court for the court to determine whether or not you are
supposed to be remanded or released on bail".
Nana Bediatuo also confirmed that KKD is still being held at the
Airport Police Station pending the conclusion of the investigation.
