Police in Kumasi have today detained the proprietor of a private health training school for allegedly assaulting a Multimedia journalist. Samuel Owusu Ababio, popularly known as Owusu King, the proprietor of the Afia Kobi Nursing and Midwifery School is in police grips after he attacked LuvFM’s Erastus Asare Donkor. Erastus, who was investigating allegations of sexual molestation made by some of the students against authorities of the school, reports that he had just finished speaking to students outside the school walls and was getting into his car when Ababio assaulted him. Although he had been interviewing the students about a mile away from the premises, Erastus suspects that some of the students may have informed Ababio of his (Erastus) decision to interview the students. He said he was about to depart when Ababio stormed up, reached into the car and grabbed him by the shirt, yelling that he had no right to interview the students without his permission. After raining insults and calling Erastus a thief, Ababio also demanded to see his ID, a request Erastus refused to comply with. Ababio then punched Erastus on the shoulder and would have done further damage if nearby students had not stepped in to restrain him. A shell-shocked Erastus called the police, who arrived on the scene escorted both parties to the police station. Ababio has been detained in order to assist the police with their investigations. This is not the first time a multimedia journalist has been assaulted in the line of duty. Adom FM’s Afia Pokua and two other reporters were assaulted while on assignment by the Manager of the Ablekuma National Health Insurance Scheme. Senchi Police officers also assaulted two Multimedia journalists who were filming on one of the Senchi ferries in February this year.
