VGMA board needs advice – Shasha Marley

Ghanaian reggae music star, Shasha Marley, says the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) board needs advice.

He made these remarks in an interview with Ibrahim Ben- Barko on Hitz FM’s Entertainment News.
When asked what he makes of the board merging the reggae and dancehall genres as one category, the ‘Maata’ hitmaker said “I think the organizers need advice because the problem is we haven’t done a good homework, reggae can never be [together with] dancehall.”

Shasha Marley said he does not share sentiments with the board merging reggae and dancehall as one.
He likened reggae and dancehall to highlife and hiplife saying “Just like highlife and hiplife is not the same genre, Reggae and dancehall is also not the same genre.”

He said if the reason for merging the two is because there are few artistes doing reggae and dancehall, then organizers should take it out of the award scheme.

Shasha Marley is one of Ghana’s most controversial reggae artistes. He has won two Ghana Music Awards in 2008 for Best Male Vocal Performance and Best Reggae Song of the Year.

This year, Stonebwoy, Ras Kuuku, MzVee, Samini, Kaakie and Episode are the nominees for the newly introduced Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year category.

This year’s Ghana Music Awards ceremony is slated for April 10 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
