I entered acting for the fun of it
While most actors harbour the dream of hitting the silver screens all their lives, for some like budding actress, Sonia Ibrahim, venturing into the make-believe world was just for the fun of it.
Sonia who is the younger sister of actress, Juliet Ibrahim, said she does admire her sister but contrary to what people think, she (Juliet) was not the reason she became an actress.
“I did my first movie just for the fun of it but it turned out to be something else. It was in Number One Fan, produced by my sister Juliet.
“Things turned serious when I got nominations and even won Best Supporting Actress at Nollywood and Africa Film Critics Award (NAFCA) for the role I played.
“This made me realise that what I was doing for fun, people saw diffrently and actually enjoyed it. Although seeing my sister there inspires me, she was not the reason I became an actress,” she said.
The award winning actress who also hosts Phamous TV programme on Viasat 1 revealed now that acting has become a part of her, she looks forward in playing roles in both English speaking and Kumawood movies.
“I like the Akan speaking movies and I think they are doing very well. Kumawood movies sell and if I get the chance, I will definitely act in them.’’
Asked who she looks up to in the African movie industry, Sonia said “as far as Nollywood and Ghallywood are concerned, there are a lot of talented, beautiful and inspiring actors and I appreciate them a lot.
“But my favourite actress in Nollywood is Mercy Johnson and of course my sister, Juliet, is my pick when it comes to Ghana,” she said.
Although she just started out in the movie industry, Sonia has a number of awards to her credit.
They include Best Supporting Actress for City People Magazine Awards for Shattered Romance which also won her the Actress Of The Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA).
