Ghanaian hip-hop recording artiste, Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin, popularly known as Joey B, has asserted that rap music does not pay much in Ghana.
Joey B revealed that he switched from rapping to singing to get more money.
“I was looking at sales and all of that, and then I realised that there is more money in singing than rapping… So I decided to do more singing to get more money…,” he said in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM.
The winner of ‘New Artiste of the Year’ at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards also stressed that switching from rapping to singing also came as a result of his growth as a musician.
In the interview, he said, as he grew bigger and better in the industry, money became an important factor in his career.
“The money comes with growth. As you grow, you need to shoot better videos, take care of yourself, your clothing needs to change, get a better car and others. You can’t just be one of the biggest artistes and just remain where you are…,” he explained.
Joey B, however, disclosed that he will release three rap songs before the year comes to an end. He is currently promoting his latest single ‘Stables’ which features La Meme Gang.
“I’m going to release about three rap songs and after that, I will go back to Afro-beats then collect my money from that side,” he said.
