There has been a call to celebrities in Ghana to eat humble pie with the Gaming Commission and others regarding the ban on celebrities to endorse and advertise for betting companies.

Speaking to DJ Sly, the host of Weekend City Show on ARK FM, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for National Lottery Authority (NLA), Goodfellow Dei Ofei said the means to bring an everlasting solution to the standpoint is dialogue and nothing more.

“Barking on social media with your problem won’t solve the issue and that is my challenge…Shatta Wale and co should stop ranting on social media and engage the commission and those who matter for dialogue,” he admonished.

The Gaming Commission of Ghana under its supervisory mandate drawn from Section 3 (2)(g) of the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721) banned celebrities from endorsing betting companies or being used in their advertisements. The commission explained their decision as a strategy to prevent celebrities from influencing and luring young fans into gambling

“Our neighbours in Nigerians are using celebrities like Davido and Patoranking who have a huge following in Ghana to endorse betting companies and social media does not segregate but you see everything in Ghana, it means celebrities in Ghana should have a business argument as to why the decision is a bad one,” Goodfellow Dei Ofei admits.

Meanwhile, Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, says the ban on celebrities from advertising for betting companies will not help the country to go forward.
