Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu has resigned, multiple sources have reported.

He took this decision after he wrote a letter to President Akufo-Addo and explained why he cannot continue to be at his position.

According to him, this is to “enable Your Excellency to take steps to appoint a replacement to that position as required by law.”

Mr Amidu was not happy about how his independence and freedom of action was not ensured by President Akufo-Addo.

“The one condition upon which I accepted to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor when you invited me to your Office on 10th January 2018 was your firm promise to me that you will respect and ensure same by your Government for my independence and freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor,” he stated.

After the news about his resignation broke, a section of Ghanaian social media users have raised concerns over why he didn’t prosecute any single person.
