The General Legal Council (GCL) has once again declined social media influencer, Elorm Ababio, popularly known as Ama Governor’s application to be called to the Ghana Bar.
The applicant-in-waiting who has made no secret of her sexuality and identification with the LGBTQ+ community has been at the center of contentious debate since last year.
The council in November 2022 constituted a committee to probe some allegations of misconduct “unbecoming of an applicant to be called to the bar” after an unknown person filed a petition against her.
This gained wide media attention, with some commending the decision of the GCL while others criticized it.
Having completed her law program, passed the exams, and sailed through her interview, Ama Governor bemoaned unfair treatment, denying the allegations of misconduct and inappropriate communications leveled against her.
In September 2023, a GCL report at the 2022/2023 bar conference indicated that after considering the complaint, permission had been granted for Ama Governor to begin applications to be called to the bar for the October/November 2023 sessions.
In a surprising turn of events, with the ceremony coming off this Friday, October 20, 2023, the council in a statement indicated that after considering her public conduct leading up to the application, it has decided to decline her application again.
Social media has become abuzz with mixed reactions following this second rejection.
