I have for sometime now been brooding over some issues I have been
wondering how I can pass them on to my District Chief Executive,
Honourable Emmanuel Odoi Lartey, Member of Parliament for the area
Honourable David Assumeng, and the opinion leaders of the Shai-Osudoku
constituency as to why my poeple are walloping in poverty and the
deplorable state of their road network from Ayikumah – Doryumu
junction with all the natural resources Doryumu have on their land.
Doryumu, is the traditional headquarters of the Hiowe Division of the
Shai State in the Shai-Osudoku District, is part of the Greater Accra
Region.
The Shai area particularly Doryumu, is covered with valuable natural
resources like the Shai Hills Resource Reserve which was established
in 1962 with area of 47 square kilometres and later expanded to 51
square kilometres in 1973 present.
The protected area was home to the shai people before they were
ejected by the British in 1892, and remains of Shai people works can
still be found at the reserve and it is the only wildlife reserve in
Accra.
What is really breeding my heart is the valuable mountain range that
is composed of different type of rock sediments and boulders that have
in them granite suitable for construction works.
Over the years the mountain range has been the raw material for a
number of privately owned quarries, whose products have been mainly
used for construction, but their road is nothing home to write about.
Pregnancy women have to endeavor with pain on the road whenever they
want to access hospital at Dodowa with drivers also charging
exorbitant fares due to the deplorable state of the road.
However, the District Assembly have signed an agreement with the
quarries company operating in the area, where a track load of
fragments of rocks is charged as a toll levy and one-half of the
amount goes to the District Assembly to support development projects.
I am urging the youth of Shai State especially those at Doryumu to
demand proper accountability from the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly.
In spite of all that, the town lacks a clinic, a proper market center
and public toilet of convenience. The people depend on an open
defecation and dug-out latrines, which poses both security and health
risks.
The issues are irritating and it is very key to the development of the
town, as well as towards the improvement in the standard of living of
the people.
The people of Doryumu deserve better and still waiting for answers,
and it is my hope that even though I am raising this concern through
this medium, it would get to the appropriate quarters.
