The debate and talks about who owns the brand name ‘Kumawood’ seems not to end anytime soon…

We all know movies produced from Kumasi has been classified as Kumawood.

How did this name came to being….

Mr. Samuel Kwabena Darko, CEO of Samdackus Initiatives, the organizers of Kumawood and Akoben Movie Awards revealed that he is the brain behind the name ‘Kumawood’ and is not a movie industry but rather the name of his awards ceremony.

In rebuttal to the claim of Mr. Samdackus; the General Secretary of Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), Mr. James Aboagye explained to felix Agyei (Mr. Lattus) on Sunyani based J.life Fm that the name Kumawood was existing before the CEO of Samdackus Initiatives took the name and register for his award ceremony.

“The name kumawood was first mentioned at the funeral of the late Kwame Owusu-Ansah at the Trade Fair Center. our colleagues in Accra did not treated us fairly, so we vowed to create our own industry and the name was suggested by Mr. Samuel Nyamekye of Miracle Films at the main entrance of the Trade Fair as at that time. so he [Samdackus] should have be creative enough to come out with his own brand for his awards.”

“It’s never true that the name Kumawood belongs to him, he can only say that to those who doesn’t know the history of the industry and not someone like me,” he fumed.

On Why They did Not Register The Name;

“We didn’t register the name because Kumasi film makers on that occasion hasn’t parted ways with those in Accra…we discussed that, we can also create our own if they ain’t treating us fairly and we settled on Kumawood since the name wood has been synonymous with film making areas.”
