Kumasi-based movie producer, Nimo Christo popularly known as Ash Bowa is unhappy following the proposal by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Catherine Afeku to establish a dedicated television channel to screen only Ghanaian films and series as a way of combating the influx of foreign movies and telenovelas in the country.
Ash Bowa speaking in an interview with Felix Agyei (Mr. Lattus) on J. Life FM’s Chart Show questioned the usefulness of the state-owned television station, GTV.
He posited that it is time for Ghana Television (GTV) to be tasked to show more Ghanaian contents.
“The Minister should come again. I do not think it is appropriate to establish a different channel whilst we have GTV which is a nationwide television. Creating a new station will be a waste of money.
“It is sad that we cannot regulate television stations in the country to show more local contents. Even GTV is showing these telenovelas so I am not surprised that the private stations are also doing same…This may not be a solution to our problem if we do not enforce the law which will prevent the various television stations from showing more foreign contents.”
Ash Bowa added that if there are no laws, the new channel will follow the steps of other channels to show foreign contents at the expense of the local ones when established.
