Cashew Farmers Association Declares Price For 2020

Ghanaian tree crop farmers in the production of cashew have declared the 2020 season as well as buying and selling price of the nuts for the season.

This was in a statement signed by Mr. Clement Anane, the National Association’s General Secretary who doubled as the secretary for the Jaman North Cashew Farmers Association and Mr. Edmond Nyuah Agyeman, the chairman of Jaman North Cashew Farmers Association.

A copy of the statement received by in Sunyani said the 2020 cashew season begins from first January 2020 and the base price is GHc 8 per kilogram.

“The base price for a kilogram of raw cashew nut is Eight Ghana Cedi (GH¢ 8.00), represent the equivalence of One US Dollar and 30 cents ($1.30)”, the statement said.

It emphasized that “farmers may accept a higher offer of price but never below the base price”.

“In fact, the leadership of the association has taken into consideration input cost, the interest rate on loans, foreign exchange rate as well as World commodity trends in arriving at the base price so as to barely break even the cost of production”.

The statement asked farmers to ensure that only dry nuts of below 12% moisture content are sold to buying agent.

It also stressed that “farmers should sell their nuts to only buying agents with calibrated scales duly certified by the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA)”.

In principle, cashew has now become a national product following the passage into Law in Ghana Tree Crop Act, the statement said.

It, therefore, request that the various Districts Security Authorities protect the national interest by preventing the adulteration of the high quality of Ghana’s products through an influx of the nuts of the questionable quality.

For the sake of the principle of “traceability” in furtherance of National interest, the statement asked trading companies base in Ghana to ensure that “no low quality” foreign products are mixed with Ghana’s products.
