Stakeholders in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region have begun a move for the area to get traditional football clubs to compete in the Ghana Premier and Division One leagues from the 2023 league season, Alhaji Haruna Seidu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area has said.

The MP, Seidu Haruna, speaking to the media in Wenchi over the weekend expressed worry that “Wenchi have many young football talents, but does not have a Premier or Division One club to build and expose the players to the Ghana National team or foreign clubs”.

The interview was on the sideline of an inter-community football tournament organized to prepare young football talents in that regard.

The maiden edition of the two-day tournament dubbed “Awhiniekoko” cup was organized by the Municipal Sports development unit under the auspices of the Assembly and was participated by 10 communities in Wenchi.

“It was in this regard that we organized Easter and Ramadan gala some few months ago and this tournament to give the players opportunities to exhibit their God-given talents and be selected and fully prepare them”.

Alhaji Seidu supported the tournament with a trophy for the winning team, two footballs and an undisclosed cash amount for participants and commended the Municipal sports development committee for the initiative.

He assured they would continue to put heads together and mobilize needed resources to facilitate and speed up works to make their goal a dream come through.

Mr Alexander Obour Damoah, the MCE in further added Authorities in Wenchi were working assiduously for the completion of a befitting sports complex to help them register their name in the Ghana Premier league.
