Wenchi Sports Committee Reveals Plans To Get Befitting Sports Facilities

The newly constituted Wenchi Municipal Sports development committee, together with stakeholders in the area said they were working assiduously for the Municipality to get befitting sports facilities by 2023.

In an interview with this reporter in Wenchi on Sunday, Okokyeredom Sarkodie Antwi, the Komahene of Wenchi Traditional Area and the Chairman of the sports development committee inaugurated in May this year said, “we want to revamp sports as a way to strengthen the unity among the people of Wenchi, therefore would ensure there were befitting facilities for the sporting disciplines”.

He stated stadium project under construction is about 80 per cent completed and the football pitch and dressing room were almost ready and they would ensure there are befitting facilities for the other disciplines to nurture and improve the skills of young talents.

Okokyeredom Antwi hoped the project would be ready for utilization next year to train and develop talents in football, marathon, basketball, volley and tennis.

This was on the sideline of a two-day inter-community football tournament dubbed “Awhiniekoko” gala, organized by the sports development committee under the auspices of the Assembly towards revamping sports in the area.

He added, ‘Nananom’ are ready to give out the land for the construction of astro turf and all other facilities needed to improve sports because Wenchi had a lot of footballers who could not go far and “we are committed to pushing these young ones with scouting and right links for them”.

Ms Ernestina Kusi, the Wenchi Municipal Sports Director stated that the objective of the tournament was also to revive sports and make them attractive in the area.

She added it was the means of shaping young football and other sporting talents and informing them of the need to exhibit professionalism and high scenes of discipline in all endeavours.

Ms Kusi said this would help prepare the minds of the youth and boost their confidence towards their career enhancement as well as strengthen the unity in Wenchi.

Mr Haruna Seidu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi, Mr Alexander Obour Damoah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Chiefs, Assembly members, physical education (PE) coordinators and other community leaders graced the two days tournament.

The tournament had 10 participating teams from different communities and the winning team-‘Akrobi’ was awarded GH¢500.00 cash and a football in addition to the trophy.

The second team had GH¢200.00 and a football while the third team got a football.

The committee also awarded the highly disciplined and best-performing players with an undisclosed amount of cash to motivate them and others.
