Ghana Institute Of Planners Set To Hold Climate Justice Training In Sunyani

The Sunyani Zone of the Ghana Institute of Planners (GIP) is organizing a training to promote planning activism for climate justice, Planner Ata-Era A. James, chairman of the GIP, Sunyani Zone has said.

He told the media in an interview on Friday at Odumase, as part of the planning processes and explained the one-day training would be held on Tuesday, October 18 this year, at the Sunyani East Municipal Assembly hall from 10 am prompt.

The GIP, he said is an international and legally recognized body of professional planners in Ghana with the vision to groom world-class planning professionals.

Planner James said the maiden training is under the theme “Climate change, inequalities and building local resilience, promoting climate justice through planning activism.” 

According to him, the event aimed at discussing and adopting Climate Science and decision support systems critical and pivotal to prioritize climate justice and just transitions in planning practices.

Ms Gifty Nyarko, the Sunyani Zonal Secretary of the GIP, who is also the Sunyani West Municipal Physical Development Planning Director added the training would be attended by Directors and all heads of developmental and planning departments from the Regional, Municipal and District levels as well as local government engineers.

Ms Nyarko said, “in accordance with Section 41 of the revised GIP’s Constitution, ten operational zones were established of which the Sunyani Zone made up of the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions is to facilitate the decentralization of its operations to promote broad-based active participation of planners”.

Some of the objectives of the zone include organizing and uniting Planners in Ghana, Promote Research, Training and Education in Planning to high professional conduct and practices, she said.

Ms Nyarko, therefore, called on all members and other professionals to attend the training for a united and holistic approach towards mitigating climate effects.
