Wayne Rooney handed Manchester United captaincy, fans are not impressed

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Manchester United have named Wayne Rooney as the club's new captain

following the departure of Nemanja Vidic.

Rooney has been given the armband on a permanent basis by new boss

Louis van Gaal, with Darren Fletcher named as vice-captain.

The England man is also believed to be among the candidates for the

Three Lions' captaincy, with Steven Gerrard having retired from

international duty.

But while some Manchester United fans seem pleased at the

responsibility handed to the striker, many have hit out at Van Gaal's

decision, pointing at Rooney's less-than-impressive disciplinary

record and previous transfer requests.

Rooney was always going to be captain. He made sure of that the

last time he bent us over a barrel.—

Rooney handed in a transfer request twice, got the payrise he

wanted & didn't deserve, now he's captain. Modern day football

everyone.—

Don't care if it goes against flow, I'm really disappointed Rooney

is the new captain. He will let us down at some point that's

guarenteed—

Wayne Rooney is no skipper. Brit press pushed their agenda. Score

for them. Symbolic gesture by Louis #ManUtd—

Wayne Rooney has got four days to learn the difference between

heads and tails.—

I'm not sure I'd have given Rooney the captaincy. Two transfer

requests doesn't ooze loyalty and honour to me. Basic captains

credentials—

Tbh I thought Rooney would be lucky to survive Van Gaals

appointment never mind get the captaincy. A player who has been on a

steady decline—

Tbh I'd of given it to Fletcher, we've run out of bargaining chips

the next time Rooney throws his toys out his pram and demands a

transfer—

Not comfortable with Rooney being captain. Can't fault him for

commitment on the pitch, you can however fault him for 2 transfer

requests.—
